Did you know that many people believe root canal therapy is an extremely uncomfortable, unpleasant treatment? While this isn’t true, it’s still much better to avoid this treatment whenever you can. However, did you know that untreated tooth decay can actually cause you to need root canal therapy because the cavity can spread to the center of your pearly whites? Please remember to have your tooth decay filled as soon as possible to avoid needing root canal therapy, but you should also remember that there are a number of steps you should take after your cavity is placed.
For example, once you have a new filling, you’ll need to be extremely careful with the type of foods you eat—though we usually recommend waiting until the numbness in your mouth has faded beforehand. If you choose to eat before the numbness is gone, you could accidentally damage your cheeks. You should also be weary of biting down on your filling for a few days until your tooth has fully healed. Hot and cold drinks may also cause pain until your tooth is healed.
If you have a new filling, please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns about your recent treatment. For example, we recommend contacting us if biting down on your filling hurts or if you spot new cracks or chips in the newly filled tooth. Lastly, if your tooth hurts when you put pressure on it, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.
