Implants

Implants are another permanent method of replacing missing teeth. A dental implant replaces a missing tooth root. Therefore it is an artificial tooth root replacement which a crown can be cemented or screwed to.

Procedure:

  • First procedure: A titanium screw is surgically placed directly into the healthy jawbone where the tooth is missing. Time is allowed for the implant to fuse with the bone a process called osseointegration. This process can take from three to six months to accomplish. The implant needs to be solid and firm in the bone before a crown can be placed on top.

  • Second procedure: An abutment or post is fabricated to screw into the implant. This is what the crown will be cemented to. The abutment will be visible above the gum line and is used to attach the crown. The crown is fabricated and cemented to the abutment.

Advantages

Dental implants  are the very best way to replace missing teeth. It is a very successful procedure. It is independent from the other teeth ( does not rely on support of adjacent teeth)  unlike bridges, and it  is very easy to maintain and keep clean. Implants have the potential to last a lifetime.  Dental implants are a more conservative approach to tooth replacement.
